24 Pages, 24 Games #1

When I looked at the title of this zine I was ecstatic. I love games; I’m even dorky enough to be in the board game club on campus. My first impression of this zine was that it would be a “how-to-play” zine with a bunch of different games. I was mistaken, this zine isn’t about the games, but more of a review/personal experience of the games played. I’ll admit, I was disappointed, but I suppose I was expecting a bit much. Who can really explain how to play a whole game with only one page of text?
Trebo starts off with card games, a subject I know little about. I suppose you can say that this zine and I just started off on the wrong foot, but was starting to lose interest. I don’t know the rules to the games Trebo is talking about but I wanted to be able to understand his tale of the games.
Luckily, this is a fast moving zine and it wasn’t very long until “part 2: dice games” began. From there I had a spark of interesting what Trebo was talking about, mainly because I actually know a few dice games. From there, Trebo continues with Monopoly-type games, games he hates, train games and childhood favorites. And as the zine progresses Trebo begins to describe basics of each game and I was able to really comprehend what he was talking about.
Most of the games Trebo writes about I’ve never played, which is why I didn’t like the beginning of this zine. As states earlier, he does get better about describing the games and I was able to enjoy his reviews more. I was particularly interested in the Train Games. There was one title that stuck out to me “Iron Dragon”. Apparnelty you have to make a train route, on a limited budget, through a magical land WITH MONSTERS. Right now all I can think of is getting my hands on this game and playing it with some friends while listening to Iron Maiden and Dragon Force.
I’ve been informed that this is his first zine. Therefore I give kudos to Trebo for a successful FIRST zine, but as a zine overall, it needs some work. This is a quarter sized zine, and I’m thinking that if the zine was a half-page zine then I could still get all of the necessary information of the game and Trebo could still keep the title 24 pages, 24 games.
Should you read it: Yes. Even with the lack of information of the games I still managed to enjoy this zine. And being the dork I am, I’m going to now scour the earth for a set of Iron Dragon, Catan Dice and Yipes.
